When the houses at the Rear of got the eviction notice in August 2022, we tried to resist, but we failed. An
evicted archive is a temporary monument to that defeat and the experience of eviction of many people in London now. Making with is creating a space for reflection on the normalisation of forced mobility, through the memory living in photography and food. And more importantly, it is an experiment at opening up to do a small recommoning of the experience of separation. We should have acted differently but we did not imagine us able to. Too Heavy to CarryToo Heavy to Carry explores the role of objects in making our home alive. Either left behind or always with us, these objects
reveal the challenge of being on the move. The chair we sat on during summer, the container with olive oil for our bread, our plant companions, or the family archive of photographs. Often invisible until uprooted, these have connected us to the place; we have built with them – comfort, memories and relationships. When shelter is commodified,
turned into an investment, an asset, this life-making becomes uncertain. Some of these objects we must carry everywhere we go because they are essential – or we have an emotional responsibility towards them – or we must leave them behind because we cannot take them with us. Out of place and reshuffled, the objects represent the disorienting experience of abandoning our home against our will. They signify the weight of deciding what is worth taking and what can be left behind, which should not be forced frivolously on people for profit. With this series, we ask you to reflect on the often-invisible bonds these objects represent and housing as a maker of life instead of just four walls and a price tag.
